We have not appointed a data protection officer, because none of the conditions that would require one applies to a publication of this size and nature.

2. Scope of this policy and who the site is for

This policy covers the website at metadiscover.org only. The site is an English-language publication whose editorial focus is readers in Japan; it is available to readers anywhere. It has no user accounts, forms, comment sections, newsletters, or payment functions, and it does not sell anything. The only ways to contact us are by email, by telephone, and by post.

3. What we do not do

  • We do not set cookies of any kind, and we do not use analytics, advertising networks, tracking pixels, fingerprinting, or session recording.
  • We do not load scripts, fonts, images, or any other resource from third-party servers. Every file on this site is served from our own domain.
  • We do not build profiles of readers, make automated decisions about them, or sell, rent, or share personal information with anyone for their own purposes.
  • We do not link to other websites, so nothing on this site can send you to a page we do not control.

4. Information we process and why

The table below lists every category of information we process, the purpose, the legal basis under the Turkish Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698 (KVKK) and, for readers to whom it applies, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and how long we keep it.

All of this information is collected by automatic means through our web server or is sent to us by you. We do not obtain personal information about readers from any other source.

5. Server logs in more detail

Like every website, ours runs on a web server that records each request it receives. These records are the only information we collect about readers who do not contact us. We use them to identify attacks and misuse, to understand and repair errors, and, if necessary, to establish the facts in a dispute. We do not use them to analyse reading habits, to build audience statistics, or to identify individual readers in the ordinary course of business. Access to the logs is restricted to the people who administer the server, and the logs are rotated and deleted automatically within the period stated above.

6. Email you send us

When you email us, we receive whatever your message contains together with your email address. We use it only to respond to you and, if you write about sponsorship, to negotiate and perform that arrangement. We do not add your address to any mailing list, because we do not operate one. We may keep correspondence for as long as necessary to complete the matter and to comply with legal obligations, after which it is deleted.

7. Theme preference stored in your browser

The site opens in light mode. If you choose dark mode with the control in the site header, your browser stores a single value in its local storage so that it can apply your choice on your next visit. This value is written only when you click the control, contains no identifier, is never transmitted to us or to anyone else, and is removed when you switch back to light mode. Because it never leaves your device, it is not personal information processed by us. Our Cookie Policy describes it in full.

8. Who receives information and where it is stored

The site is hosted by ITENOS GmbH, Bonner Talweg 100, 53113 Bonn, Germany, which stores and processes server logs on our behalf as a data processor under a written data processing agreement and does not use them for its own purposes. Our hosting provider is established in Germany, so server logs are transferred abroad. That transfer is made under the written data processing agreement described above together with one of the safeguards listed in Article 9 of Law No. 6698.

Apart from our hosting provider, we disclose information only to competent public authorities, courts, or regulators when the law requires us to do so, and to professional advisers bound by confidentiality where necessary to establish or defend legal claims. There are no other recipients.

9. Security

The site is served over encrypted connections only. No third-party code runs on our pages. Server access is limited to authorised administrators, logs are deleted automatically, and the software that runs the site is kept up to date. These measures are the technical and organisational measures required by Article 12 of Law No. 6698.

10. Information notice under the Turkish Personal Data Protection Law No. 6698

This section restates, in the form required by the Communiqué on the Procedures and Principles for Compliance with the Obligation to Inform, the information that AYTUG AKYUZ EDİTORYAL MEDYA ANONİM ŞİRKETİ provides as data controller.

  • Identity of the data controller: AYTUG AKYUZ EDİTORYAL MEDYA ANONİM ŞİRKETİ, İstiklal Mah. Şahkulu Cad. No: 299, Kat: 1, Daire: 3, 34245 Gaziosmanpaşa, İstanbul, Türkiye.
  • Purposes of processing: ensuring the security of the website and its server, detecting and preventing abuse, diagnosing technical faults, answering correspondence, negotiating and performing sponsorship agreements, and establishing, exercising, or defending legal rights.
  • Recipients and purpose of transfer: our hosting provider, ITENOS GmbH (Germany), as data processor, for the purpose of operating the server; competent public institutions and authorities, when required by law; and legal advisers bound by professional confidentiality, for the purpose of establishing, exercising, or defending legal rights.
  • Method and legal basis of collection: server logs are collected by fully automatic means through the website's server software on the basis of Article 5(2)(f) and Article 5(2)(e) of the Law; correspondence is collected by electronic mail or by telephone, by partly automatic means, on the basis of Article 5(2)(f) and, for sponsorship agreements, Article 5(2)(c).
  • Your rights under Article 11 of the Law: to learn whether your personal data is processed; to request information if it has been processed; to learn the purpose of processing and whether the data is used in accordance with it; to know the third parties in Türkiye or abroad to whom the data is transferred; to request rectification of incomplete or inaccurate data; to request erasure or destruction under Article 7; to request that rectification, erasure, or destruction be notified to third parties to whom the data has been transferred; to object to a result that is to your detriment and that arises from analysis carried out exclusively by automated systems; and to claim compensation for damage caused by unlawful processing.

11. How to exercise your rights

Under Article 13 of Law No. 6698 and the Communiqué on the Procedures and Principles of Application to the Data Controller, you may submit an application to us:

  • in writing, by post to AYTUG AKYUZ EDİTORYAL MEDYA ANONİM ŞİRKETİ, İstiklal Mah. Şahkulu Cad. No: 299, Kat: 1, Daire: 3, 34245 Gaziosmanpaşa, İstanbul, Türkiye;
  • by email to contact@metadiscover.org, signed with a secure electronic signature or mobile signature; we also accept ordinary email applications voluntarily, and may ask you to confirm your identity before responding.

Formal applications under Turkish law must be in Turkish and must include your name and surname, your signature for written applications, your Turkish identity number or, for foreign nationals, your nationality and passport or identity number, your postal or electronic address for notification, and the subject of your request. We are happy to correspond informally in English. We respond free of charge as soon as possible and at the latest within thirty days; where a response exceeds ten pages, a fee of one Turkish lira per additional page may be charged in accordance with the Communiqué. If we refuse your application, if you consider our response insufficient, or if we do not respond within thirty days, you may lodge a complaint with the Personal Data Protection Board (Kişisel Verileri Koruma Kurulu) within thirty days of learning our response and in any event within sixty days of your application, as Article 14 of the Law provides.

12. Readers in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom

Our editorial focus is readers in Japan, and we do not direct advertising at any country in the European Economic Area or at the United Kingdom. We nevertheless apply the standards of Article 13 of the GDPR to everyone. If the GDPR or the UK GDPR applies to you, you have the right to request access to your personal data, to have it rectified or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format where processing is based on a contract, and to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority of the country in which you live. The legal bases we rely on are stated in section 4. Because we do not process personal data on the basis of consent, there is no consent to withdraw. Server logs are stored on our hosting provider's servers in Germany and are accessed by us from Türkiye, which is not covered by an adequacy decision of the European Commission; that access is governed by the data processing agreement described in section 8. Information you send us by email is received directly by us in Türkiye. We have not appointed a representative under Article 27 of the GDPR; should we begin to direct our services at readers in the European Economic Area, we will do so and update this policy first. You are not required by law or by any contract to provide us with personal data: the technical data described in section 4 is sent automatically by your browser whenever it requests a page, and apart from that you can read every page of the site without giving us your email address or telephone number. Nothing on the site is withheld if you choose not to contact us.

13. Readers in Japan

We do not maintain any database of personal information about readers. If you email us from Japan, the purpose of use of the personal information you send is limited to answering your message and, where relevant, concluding a sponsorship agreement, and we do not provide that information to any third party outside our own organisation and its hosting provider without your consent. Requests and complaints about personal information may be sent to AYTUG AKYUZ EDİTORYAL MEDYA ANONİM ŞİRKETİ at contact@metadiscover.org or to the postal address above. Because this site sends no information stored on your device to any third party, the external transmission provisions of Japan's Telecommunications Business Act are not triggered; if that ever changes, we will publish the required notice before doing so.

Each page carries one clearly labelled sponsor placement. When a sponsor is present, the placement is a static image or text supplied by the sponsor and placed by us on our own server; it contains no sponsor code, sets no cookies, and does not track you. When no sponsor is present, the placement shows an invitation to contact us. If we ever needed to use technology that stores or reads information on your device for a sponsor, we would update this policy and our Cookie Policy and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent before doing so.

15. Children

The site publishes general educational content suitable for readers of any age and does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, please email us and we will delete it.

16. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when our practices or the law change. Each version carries the effective date shown at the top of the page, and material changes are explained on this page when they take effect.

17. Contact

Questions about this policy may be sent to AYTUG AKYUZ EDİTORYAL MEDYA ANONİM ŞİRKETİ at contact@metadiscover.org or by post to İstiklal Mah. Şahkulu Cad. No: 299, Kat: 1, Daire: 3, 34245 Gaziosmanpaşa, İstanbul, Türkiye. Our Cookie Policy and Terms and Conditions complete this policy and are consistent with it.
